As the author of comic novels, Gert is all too aware that one person’s “gruellingly unfunny” is another person’s “funny, sidesplittingly so”. Edward St Aubyn seems to have stirred up a genteel spat in The Guardian with his latest book satirising literary prizes. Is he just miffed at not winning the Booker in 2006? Is he dismayed by the increasingly commercial-minded judges? He is a dodgy writer, it’s true; when he’s good he’s very very good, but when he’s bad is he as horrid as this reviewer thinks?
