Desert Life at Dawn

This is the final section of a longer poem Dying languages. Dying Languages  won the  2012 Dorothy Porter Poetry Award and was first published in Award Winning Australian Writing (Melbourne Books 2012).

 

Dawn

 

 arawunga

early morning before dawn

 

tokwampari

early morning when birds sing

 

yartijumurra

darkness before daylight

 

wujukari

first light before sunrise

 

he mixes them up

now that he sleeps indoors
