Winnie the Pooh is 90

The Guardian has a very nice article on the 90th anniversary of the publication of Winnie the Pooh, containing one of my favourite Pooh quotes:

It is more fun to talk with someone who doesn’t use long, difficult words but rather short, easy words like ‘What about lunch?’

Above is the cover of a book I once got for a Latin prize. (Who would have thought the nuns would be so imaginative?) Here’s a sample:

Primum secum dixit: “Iste bombus aliquid significat. Nullus exstat bombus bombans atque rebombans significatu carens. Si est bombus, est etiam bombans aliquis, et unica causa bombi bombantis, quod equidem sciam est haec: apis esse.”

First of all he said to himself: “That buzzing-noise means something. There isn’t ever a  buzzing-noise like that, just buzzing and buzzing again, without meaning something. If there’s a buzzing-noise, something’s buzzing, and the only reason for buzzing a buzzing-noise that I know of is this: you’re a bee.”

You can read more best-of-Pooh quotes here (your homework is to translate them into Latin):
