As a sucker for all things Roman, Gert was delighted to read about the “little Pompeii” discovered in Saint Colombe, a small town near the city of Vienne. Discovered when the area was being excavated for apartment blocks, it’s a major Roman settlement complete with lavish houses, mosaics, shops, gardens and public buildings, probably destroyed by fire in the 3rd century. It may be some time before you can visit the site, but the mosaics will be on display in the Vienne museum in 2019.

Oh no, not another reason to go to France…
