Our lifetime friendships can be more steadfast and trustworthy than any marriage, and considerably more treasurable.

Those few persons whom I gained as friends before the age of twenty-five, for example. Nothing they would ever say or do would diminish my love and esteem for them. It’s as if they were grafted upon me.

  1. Rather hoping my friend Gert wrote this. We who are lucky to have loved rusted on friends of decades are more than fortunate..

    1. Through all the births and deaths, relationship breakups and travels it is reassuring to have the tried and true mates to help make sense of it all.

  2. This is inspiring. What does Gert think about her perspective on fiction? I’m feeling like maybe I ought to go back and try it again. I also ought to check out some of her work.

    1. I have only read her memoir Them, published in about 2005. This is enjoyable reading about her parents ( her mother was courted by Mayakovsky in her youth)and became a hat designer for Saks. Her stepfather was art editor for Vogue. They thought rather highly of themselves. du Plessix Grey wrote a novel about her early years, Lovers and Tyrants published in 1976 which might be a bit more frank about her parents. Then she wrote biographies, Soviet Women, Simone Weil or you might fancy At Home with the Marquis de Sade.

      1. “At Home with the Marquis de Sade”! I might read some of the others first. I ordered the memoir today; it should be here in a week or so. We have a fair amount of travel to do in the next month or so, and this sounds perfect for the airplanes.

          1. Three scheduled trips so far in the next few months — a cousin’s memorial service in San Jose, California at the end of this week; another cousin’s service near Philadelphia on the June solstice (a very calm Christian service, however), the Midwest and a conference in the Washington dc area late July/early August. Regina went to work for AirBnB; we are talking about April for either England (if she can come) or Melbourne/Tasmania if she can’t. By April, I hope to have finished Francine . . .
