John Cooper Clarke

At a recent family wedding we needed a poem for a nine year old boy to read on behalf of the groom. The  Gert who is a Poet had the inspired idea of this poem by the punk poet, John Cooper Clarke, which hit exactly the right note. The performance was a resounding success.

I Wanna be Yours

I wanna be your vacuum cleaner
Breathing in your dust
I wanna be your Ford Cortina
I will never rust
If you like your coffee hot
Let me be your coffee pot
You call the shots
I wanna be yours
I wanna be your raincoat
For those frequent rainy days
I wanna be your dreamboat
When you want to sail away
Let me be your teddy bear
Take me with you anywhere
I don’t care
I wanna be yours

    1. We thought so Laid back and unaffected. So much better than Kahlil Gibran et al (in my view) The pair who married both dislike overly sentimental words, so this was perfect.
