W. S. Merwin: The Solstice

Milky Way over Petit Jean State Park, Arkansas. 2019.

we watch the red birds in the morning
we hope for the quiet
daytime together
the year turns into air

but we are together in the whole night
with the sun still going away
and the year
coming back

  1. Thanks for sharing this! I read the whole poem and particularly like the last stanza. Did you do anything to celebrate the winter solstice? I got up in the dark to watch the sunrise over the sea. Very special.
