Michelle Paver : Wakenhyrst

Wakenhyrst is set in a village of the same name in Edwardian Suffolk.

 In a manor house on the fens lives Edmund Stearne with his servants and family.  A truly tyrannical father, he has no concern for anything but his own needs. The village people live in pitiful squalor, his wife is subject to his demands to such a degree that even the local doctor asks him to desist somewhat, his children are cared for by servants and his daughter Maud, the narrator for most of the story, is subjected to thrashings for mild misdemeanors, and only tolerated for the assistance she can give him in his work.
