In Macbeth Shakespeare has a great deal to say about sleep; sleep lost through guilt and o’erleaping ambition. In Act 2 Scene 2 Macbeth says,
Methought I heard a voice cry, ‘Sleep no more!’
Macbeth doth murder sleep: the innocent sleep.
Sleep that knitteth up the ravelled sleeve of care,
The death of each day’s life, sore labour’s bath,
