Someone will find out, someone will know

Earth-ErdeSomeone will find out, someone will know.
And if somewhere in this great planet
The truth is discovered, a patch of it, dried, glazed by the sun,
It will just hang on, in its own infamy, humility. No one
Will be better for it, but things can’t get any worse.
Just keep playing, mastering as you do the step
Into disorder this one meant. Don’t you see
It’s all we can do?

From John Ashbery’s Rain Moving In

      1. I haven’t read much John Ashbery, but mostly because I haven’t read widely in the poetry world. Sounds as if I should take a look. The form — a sonnet, although non-traditional, was pleasing. I’m really focused these days on haibun, etc. –they take so long to write, submit, re-write, etc.

  1. Just reread it and I still come away with a bad feeling, especially from the quote “No one Will be better for it, but things can’t get any worse. Just keep playing, mastering as you do the step Into disorder this one meant. Don’t you see It’s all we can do? ” I find hope is sorely lacking.

    1. You might be a bit cheered up by the lines that follow the bit I quoted:

      The dial has been set
And that’s ominous, but all your graciousness in living
Conspires with it, now that this is our home:
A place to be from, and have people ask about.
