Yet another in Gert’s series Strange Things Australian Animals Do.
Echo is the resident lyrebird at Sydney’s Tooronga Zoo, and this is his new trick. Apparently he’s been practising and perfecting it for a year or so.
“I can only assume that he picked it up from our guests. Obviously he has been working on his craft during lockdown. But this concerns me, as I thought the zoo was a happy place for families to visit!” the supervisor said.
For an encore, Echo can offer a power drill or a fire alarm complete with evacuation instructions.
I am persuaded!
To leave your baby in the cloakroom?
Luckily, I have no babies to leave behind. But the lyre bird does a compelling rendition of a left-behind baby.
Sounds like the skills set of an African Grey
Wow! I’m so glad not to have to wake up to that now!

That is remarkable!
Well – that beats the blackbird and the ice cream van!
